The Calgary Elite Basketball program expects a minimum average of 75% in the core classes in order to participate in the program with an expectation of achieving at least an 85% in the player’s senior year. Of course, proficiency on the basketball court is required as well.
Admissibility to Canadian universities varies from school to school, but generally, marks in Grade 12 (i.e. level 30 classes) that exceed an average of 70% would meet the minimum standards for admission to some faculties at most Canadian universities. Many faculties require much higher grade 12 marks, with an average approaching 80% and in some cases, even higher. Requirements for a 2nd language, sciences and other “academic” classes vary from school to school and faculty to faculty. Two classes that almost every Canadian university require are, English 30-1 and Math 30 Pure.
Because of familiarity with admission standards at Canadian universities, most high school counselors are a great resource when considering schools in Canada.
Academic requirements for receiving an athletic award in the states are based on two factors:
Generally, a “core” average of 70% (with a commensurate SAT/ACT score) will be good enough to meet the minimum standards as established by the NCAA Meeting these minimum standards might be good enough to get admitted to about half of the Division 1 schools (Approximately 325 school currently playing men’s basketball). A “core” average of 75% (with a commensurate SAT/ACT score) should gain admission to another 10- 12% of the schools. An 80% “core” GPA should add another 10-12% more schools. An 85% “core” GPA another 10-12%. And a “core” average of 90% (with a commensurate SAT/ACT score) should gain admission to almost every Division 1 school currently playing men’s basketball.
