| John Hegwood coaching at the Pangos July 2008 All West Camp held at the Hangar Athletic Xchange (HAX) in Southern California. The camp featured players from the West Coast and Canada. Calgary Elite players had a chance to compete against top rated players, Jeremy Tyler, Michael Snaer, Hollis Thompson, Anthony Marshall and Cezar Guerrero to name a few. The Calgary Elite players from Canada had a chance to see what the next level is all about. |
John was born in Gary, Indiana and played his high school ball there. John played at Roosevelt High School where he received Indiana All State honors and was a High School All American. After graduation, John played one year at City College of San Francisco receiving Junior College All American honors and was inducted into the City College of San Francisco’s hall of fame. John transferred to the University of San Francisco and at USF John was a first team WCAC All Conference player and College All American. John appeared in two NCAA tournaments and helped USF to a record of 71-20. John played basketball and baseball for USF and was drafted by the then, San Diego Clippers and the Toronto Blue Jays. John chose basketball and played 14 years as a professional player. John played world-wide including Canada with the Calgary 88’s.
John Hegwood’s professional coaching career began in Argentina and continued with the Calgary 88’s and Calgary Outlaws. John spent a year coaching the Mount Royal Cougars before moving on to developing his own skill development program in Calgary. John is currently Calgary Elite Director of Basketball Operations and brings over 40 years of experience as a player and coach. John is considered one of the most dedicated and hard working coaches in Canada. During his career, John has played with and against some of the greatest players to ever play the game. Players like Julius (Dr. J Erving), Ervin Magic Johnson, David Robinson, Isiah Thomas, Dominique Wilkins, Michael Jordan (MJ), John Starks, Mark Aguirre, Hakeem Olajuwon and a host of other great players. Coach John is truly a legend of the game.
